Lawn Mowing

Mowing is the bread and butter of what we do, and it is the job that makes the biggest visible difference to a property. A lawn cut to the right height, with the edges and corners properly finished, reads as a maintained home from the street — and a striped finish on an open lawn is one of those small things that makes an ordinary section look sharp.

The height we cut at depends on the time of year and the state of the grass. Cutting too short in a hot spell scalps the lawn and leaves it thin and pale; leaving it too long in winter shades out the growth underneath. We set the deck so the sward stays thick and green, and we keep the same height through a visit so the finish is even across the whole lawn.

Edges are the part most people notice. Straight paths, along fences, and around beds and trees are cut in by hand so the lines stay crisp instead of ending in a ragged fringe. We also blow the clippings off hard surfaces — paths, driveways and decks — so nothing is tracked back into the house.

You can have the lawn done once, or you can set a rhythm that suits the season. Most lawns in Christchurch grow fast through spring and summer and slow right down in winter, so the cut that keeps a lawn presentable in January is not the cut that suits it in July.
